Are your questions wrong? I think it should be a^2 - b^2 - 2a + 1 1) a^2 - b^2 - 2a + 1 =a^2 - 2a + 1 - b^2 =(a - 1)^2 - b^2 =(a + b - 1)(a - b - 1)
